As we are sure you are aware we love to participate in a whole range of activities in order to raise money for charitable causes close to our hearts. We have hosted static bike rides, bake sales and we usually do the Santa Fun Run in Marlow – this summer we took on one of the more robust challenges available to us.
The Ridgeway Walk
Following a route used since prehistoric times by travellers, herdsmen and soldiers the 87 mile long Ridgeway passes through ancient landscapes through downs land, secluded valleys and woodland. Our team of intrepid ramblers conquered the epic 88 mile walk spanning 5 counties and raising an amazing £635 (incl. Gift Aid) in aid of Niemann-Pick Research Foundation (NPRF).
The Ridgeway National Trail follows the line of the Chiltern hills and includes white horses, ancient long barrows, remnants of old forts and a sense that you’re following a journey that thousands have followed before you.
Apart from 24 miles of hilly terrain through which you gain 4286m in elevation, the Ridgeway route is a relatively light walk along countryside ridges, with amazing views over some relatively flat vistas and you pass some fantastic historical features, like white chalk horses and long barrows.
The Niemann Pick Research Foundation
This fantastic charity raises money to invest in research and funding trials of therapies to help treat Niemann-Pick C , a very rare, terminal, neurodegenerative disease.
The disease can trace its history back to 1914, and is extremely rare, presenting only 1,000 diagnosed cases worldwide with 10% of those in the UK. The neurodegenerative nature of this disease means that sufferers experience a slow loss of every day functions like talking and swallowing and so, researching and developing therapies are invaluable for their quality of life.
We took great pride in completing the Ridgeway walk on behalf of NPRF and are delighted to have been able to help this great cause.
“Thank you for all your support. We have loved watching your progress along the Ridgeway and can’t thank you enough for picking our charity to raise much needed funds for and just as importantly raising awareness of what we are trying to do to a new audience” Sue French, NPRF
